• Go to http://cygwin.com and click setup.exe.
• Choose the UNIX file format and install cygwin under a directory whose name doesn't contain spaces or tabs.
• Install the following cygwin packages:
  • xorg-x11-*
  • libjpeg
  • libtiff
  • libpng
  • libncurses-devel
  • libncurses
  • postgresql
  • lesstif
  • sunrpc
  • freetype2
  • readline
• Suppose you downloaded the following files in c:\download\grass:
  • grass5.4.0_i686-pc-cygwin_install.sh
  • grass5.4.0_i686-pc-cygwin_bin.tar.gz
  • tcltk-8.4.7-cygwin.tar.gz You need this version of tcl/tk instead of the cygwin package.
  • Mesa-6.2-cygwin.tar.gz
  • gdal-1.2.3-cygwin.tar.gz
• Open a cygwin shell window and follow the instruction below:

        cd /cygdrive/c/download/grass
        sh grass5.4.0_i686-pc-cygwin_install.sh grass5.4.0_i686-pc-cygwin_bin.tar.gz
        cd /
        tar xvfz /cygdrive/c/download/grass/tcltk-8.4.7-cygwin.tar.gz
        tar xvfz /cygdrive/c/download/grass/Mesa-6.2-cygwin.tar.gz
        tar xvfz /cygdrive/c/download/grass/gdal-1.2.3-cygwin.tar.gz
        cd
  

  Now installation is completed.
• Start X Window:

  
  startxwin.sh
  

• Run GRASS from xterm executed by X Window (not from the above cygwin shell):

  grass54
